What Rec Room creators can still recover after the shutdown
Rec Room closed on 1 June 2026. Rooms on the old servers are gone. Here is what a local export, screenshot set, or handle still buys you.
You can recover only what left the platform before it closed: local builds, exports, recorded layouts, and the audience that still searches your name. Nothing can be pulled from the original servers.
What the shutdown actually took
Rec Room shut down on 1 June 2026. Costs ran ahead of revenue, the VR market moved, and some technology went to Snap. Published rooms that lived only on their servers are not coming back.
Search demand is still mostly the brand name, not “Rec Room alternative.” The people with a real problem are creators who lost work, not shoppers comparing social VR apps.
Inventory what you kept
Look for editor exports, local caches, video fly-throughs, and screenshots of spawn points and circuits. A folder of images is enough to rebuild a room’s blocking even when the original format will not import cleanly.
Reserve the handle you built under. Names are how returning visitors will look for you; the room file is how they will recognize the space.
- Keep original filenames and dates
- Note which rooms were public versus private
- Do not wait for an official recovery tool from the old operator — there is not one
Publish again on something that can leave
Openrooms is independent of Rec Room Inc. and Snap. The point of a successor is not a visual clone. It is a place to claim a handle, bring what survived, and keep an export path so this failure mode does not repeat.
A social space that only works in a headset will be empty. Phone and desktop matter first.
