Social VR games, and what happened to the biggest one

A social VR game is a shared virtual space where the activity is other people rather than a scripted campaign. Players meet, talk, build and play user-made experiences in the same room. The category is small, expensive to run, and has lost several of its largest platforms.

What separates a social VR game from a VR game

A VR game gives you a designed experience. A social VR game gives you a room and other people, and most of what happens is made by players rather than by the studio. That difference decides everything else about it: moderation matters more than level design, and the platform lives or dies on whether anyone else is logged in.

The genre also does not require a headset, which surprises people. The platforms with the most users allowed phones and desktops, because a social space that only works in VR is a social space with almost nobody in it.

The platforms, and their current state

Rec Room was the largest by reach — around 150 million lifetime players and a peak valuation near $3.5 billion — and shut down on 1 June 2026. Its costs consistently outpaced its revenue as the VR market contracted, and parts of its technology were sold to Snap.

VRChat remains live and is the default answer for people looking for a social VR space today. Horizon Worlds is Meta's entry. Neither is a straight replacement for what Rec Room did, because Rec Room's building tools were aimed at people who had never opened a game engine.

Why the category is hard

Running a social platform means paying for servers whether or not anyone is spending, and moderating user-made content at a scale that grows faster than revenue. Rec Room monetised through a virtual currency rather than subscriptions, which meant income tracked engagement rather than commitment.

The lesson for anything built next is that a smaller platform with paying creators is a different business from a large free one — not a lesser version of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest social VR game?

VRChat is the largest still operating. Rec Room was larger by lifetime players but shut down on 1 June 2026.

Do social VR games need a headset?

Usually not. The platforms that reached real scale all supported phones and desktops, and most of their traffic came from those rather than from headsets.

Are social VR games free?

Most are free to enter and monetise through cosmetics, currency or subscriptions. That model is part of why the economics are difficult.

Can you still play Rec Room?

No. The servers were shut down on 1 June 2026 and the experiences hosted on them are not playable.
